NOVABAA's Inaugural Juneteenth Celebration
SAVE THE DATE! - Friday June 18, 2021
On June 16, 2020, Governor Ralph Northam announced that the Commonwealth would recognize Juneteenth as a paid state holiday in remembrance of the abolition of slavery in the United States.
For those unfamiliar with the history of Juneteenth remembrance: The state of Texas was the last of the confederate states to abolish slavery, and on June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans learned that the Emancipation Proclamation, issued nearly two years earlier, freed them from the bondage of slavery. This holiday is a time for reflection on where we have come from as a people, while we discuss where we are, and where we need to go.
Accordingly, NOVABAA intends to put on some incredible programming that we believe will be educational, thought provoking, and fun! We won't let the cat out of the bag just yet, but we have some really incredible treats lined up for our Juneteenth program, which we intend to put on annually.
June 19th falls on a Saturday this year, and the state holiday is on June 18th, which is the date of our program. If you are interested in assisting the Black History Month Committee in putting working on our Juneteenth program, please contact Rex.
